Three pupils, months of practice, one trophy: Constantia Primary wins R100,000 (about $6,000) for maths

Noamie Lokemba, Michael Musaiwa and Richard Kamanga spent months preparing with their mentor, teacher Justin Fielies — and it paid off in front of the whole province. Constantia Primary School in Cape Town has won first prize of R100,000 (about $6,000) in the mathematics section of the GrowSmart competition, announced at the Old Mutual campus on 24 October. The programme, run since 2010 by Growthpoint Properties with the Western Cape Education Department, strengthens reading, writing and maths for Grade 4 to 6 pupils. John D Crawford School in Beaufort West took second place and Meadowridge Primary third. It was only Constantia's second year in the competition — and principal Alastair Adams said the win meant far more than a trophy.

The upbeat factorthree children, one devoted mentor, and proof that practice really does make mathematicians.
