Twenty neighbours go home healthy: Kenya releases its first Ebola contacts from quarantine

Twenty people in Kenya went home to their families on Monday with a clean bill of health — the first group of Ebola contacts to complete 21 days of monitoring without developing any symptoms. Patrick Amoth, director-general in Kenya's health ministry, called it 'a milestone worth celebrating' while reminding the country the work is not finished: the remaining patients are stable and in treatment, and 98 more people still in quarantine are due to be released in four waves beginning November 3. Amoth had a request for everyone else, too — that those leaving quarantine 'posed no risk to their families or communities' and should be welcomed home, not feared. In an outbreak, that welcome matters: it is what makes the next person willing to come forward, be monitored, and keep the circle of safety holding.

The upbeat factortwenty people walked out of quarantine healthy — and a health chief asking their neighbours to welcome them home.
