Two million neighbours in uniform: Africa's plan to back its community health workers

Africa already relies on an quiet army of neighbours: community health workers who spot a risky pregnancy, notice a child who missed a vaccine, and raise the first alarm in an outbreak. In Abuja, Nigeria has hosted the launch of the Community Health Programme Continental Acceleration Plan 2026–2030, aiming for two million such workers across Africa by 2030 — with reliable pay and legal recognition at its centre. The Africa CDC counts 1,059,085 workers already deployed as of May 2026; the launch, led by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, brought together 51 African countries and more than 30 partners. The estimated investment need is $28 billion through 2030 — a projection, not yet pledged money — but the direction is set: the first link in African healthcare is finally getting a continental plan.
