Valentina walks into the mangroves: UNESCO turned coastal science into a comic young readers can carry

UNESCO has published Las Visiones del Manglar ('Visions of the Mangrove'), a Spanish-language comic that follows a young girl, Valentina, as she discovers the tangled coastal forests where land meets sea — and the communities whose lives depend on them. Illustrator Antonia Lara Gómez and local experts built the story across three chapters, from seeds to roots, and it forms part of MangRes, a restoration programme working across seven biosphere reserves in Latin America and the Caribbean. The comic was presented this week during COP17 in Yerevan.

The upbeat factorsome science persuades best as a story a child can retell — mangroves now have theirs.
