11 million children, one shield: Sudan's polio teams set out house to house

Health workers across Sudan have begun a nationwide polio vaccination drive aiming to reach around 11 million children with the novel oral polio vaccine, backed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The first phase alone targets 6 million children in 107 localities across 12 states, with 5 million more to follow across Darfur and West Kordofan. The campaign answers a variant poliovirus that began circulating in December 2024 — and its real story is logistics and trust: vaccinators reaching children in the hardest-to-reach areas so a preventable disease gets no foothold. 'No child in Sudan should suffer from a disease that can be prevented through vaccination,' said UNICEF's acting representative Angela Kearney.
