44 turbines standing: Virginia's giant offshore wind farm reaches 85% complete

Off Virginia Beach, the largest offshore wind project in the United States is taking physical shape. Dominion Energy's 2.6-gigawatt Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has installed 44 of its 176 turbines — work on the 45th is under way — and reached about 85% overall completion, the company reported Monday. All 176 foundations are in, all turbine towers, nacelles and blades are fabricated, and 143 of 176 cable segments (about 260 miles of cable) are laid. The farm began delivering electricity to Virginia's grid in March and, when finished at the end of 2027, its 176 Siemens Gamesa turbines should generate enough power for about 660,000 homes — at a levelised cost of about $62 per megawatt-hour, below the $80–$90 range first filed.
