A chance to stitch the rainforest back to the reef: 20,333 hectares in Far North Queensland
On the lands of the Jirrbal people, a hundred kilometres south-west of Cairns, sits Wooroora: 20,333 hectares of rainforest, wet forest and savanna, 98 percent intact — one of the only places on Earth where cassowary country meets koala country. Bush Heritage Australia has launched the most ambitious appeal in its history to buy and protect it. Joined to its neighbouring Yourka Reserve, Wooroora would complete a 63,833-hectare climate refuge and the final link in a 429,000-hectare nature corridor running to the national parks — tying the Wet Tropics' headwaters to the Great Barrier Reef. At least twelve threatened species live there, from southern cassowaries to magnificent broodfrogs.
