A digital helper is helping family doctors catch kidney disease while it is still treatable
Chronic kidney disease often hides in plain sight: the warning signs sit in a patient's health record, but busy primary-care doctors can miss them until the disease is advanced. Researchers at UC San Francisco built Treat CKD, a tool that scans health records, flags patients with kidney disease, sorts them by risk and suggests guideline-backed treatments. Presented at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week, the tool was judged easy to use and a natural fit for clinic workflows by the doctors who tested it — a step toward catching the disease years earlier.
The upbeat factorthe earlier kidney disease is spotted, the more of it can be slowed or stopped.
