A drug-coated balloon for leg arteries keeps working three years on, sparing patients repeat procedures
Three-year results from the SIRONA trial, presented at the TCT 2026 medical conference and published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, show that a sirolimus-coated balloon kept 88.2% of patients free from needing another artery-opening procedure, compared with 80.2% for the older paclitaxel-coated balloon. The trial followed 482 patients with narrowed leg arteries at 25 hospitals in Germany and Austria. The balloon delivers its medicine during a single brief inflation and leaves nothing behind in the artery.
The upbeat factorone short procedure that keeps working for years means fewer returns to the operating table for people who struggle to walk.
