A first for one of the toughest cancers: a two-in-one antibody extends life in bile-duct cancer

Bile-duct cancer is rare, aggressive and short on options — which is why the room paid attention in Madrid. In the Phase 3 HARMONi-GI1 trial, people receiving ivonescimab — a first-of-its-kind antibody that blocks two cancer pathways at once — plus chemotherapy lived longer than those on an established immunotherapy plus chemotherapy. The trial met its main goal of overall survival, along with every key secondary measure, in a prespecified interim look reviewed by an independent monitoring committee. Professor Jian Zhou of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, presented the results at the ESMO Congress 2026 Presidential Symposium, where the study was selected as a late-breaking presentation.

The upbeat factorFor a cancer that rarely gets good news, a first-in-class drug just moved the line that matters most: survival.
