A heart valve built for the in-between hearts: 22 patients, no valve-related deaths at 30 days

Heart valves come in sizes, and so do hearts — and patients whose aortic ring falls between standard sizes have long been the hardest to fit well. At the TCT cardiology conference in San Diego, Anteris Technologies presented 30-day results for the medium size of its DurAVR transcatheter heart valve in 22 patients with severe aortic stenosis: single-digit pressure gradients, large effective openings, no moderate or severe leaks around the valve, and no valve-related deaths. The figures come from the company's EMBARK study, presented by Dr Azeem Latib; a larger randomised trial, PARADIGM, aiming for about 1,000 patients, is now enrolling to test the valve head-to-head against today's standard devices.

The upbeat factorfor the hearts that never quite fit the standard sizes — a valve designed for them, with a clean first report card.
