A home-grown clock in orbit: ISRO's newest navigation satellite takes its place

India's space agency ISRO has placed NVS-03, the third satellite in its next-generation NavIC navigation series, into its intended transfer orbit aboard a GSLV-F18 rocket. The satellite carries an atomic clock built in India — the heartbeat that lets navigation signals stay precise — and adds a new L1 signal alongside the system's existing bands, strengthening a home-grown positioning service that covers India and the region extending 1,500 km beyond it. It is the quiet kind of infrastructure millions of phones, ships and aircraft will rely on without ever knowing its name.

The upbeat factora navigation system a whole region can call its own, kept ticking by a clock built at home.
