A Los Angeles gala raised nearly $2 million to train more children's epilepsy specialists

When a child has epilepsy, the specialist who can help is often hundreds of miles away — America has too few pediatric epileptologists, and the Care & Cure Institute exists to train more of them. At its 20th anniversary gala in Beverly Hills, the institute raised nearly $2 million and set its next goal: grow its network of endowed training fellowships from 57 specialists toward 100 within five years. Its fellows, placed at children's hospitals from UCLA to Michigan, have already helped provide specialised care to more than 250,000 children. The evening honoured actor Ben Affleck, who spent the day before the gala with the institute's doctors at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital.

The upbeat factortwo million dollars aimed at the scarcest resource in children's medicine — the right specialist, close to home.
