Darcy's classmates made cushions and cards — and raised money for the heart ward that cares for her
When Year Six pupils at the Royal school in Birmingham studied the circulatory system, they heard the story of Darcy, a young patient at Birmingham Children's Hospital whose tiny heart was repaired by its surgeons when she weighed less than five kilos. The class decided their heart topic should do some good: they made heart-themed cards, bookmarks and cushions, and raised money for Young at Heart, the charity that supports children and families on the hospital's heart ward with equipment, support groups and events. 'We heard about Darcy — the charity makes her mum feel comfortable to talk to other parents,' said pupil Iqra. 'That gave us the idea.' Darcy's mum Fran puts it simply: 'It's just nice to know there's people there who get it.'
