Eleven nations, woven into one show: Southeast Asia's textiles take the Jakarta stage
A kebaya — the embroidered blouse now recognised by UNESCO as shared heritage — can come from five countries at once, and this week Jakarta showed how. SEA Waves, the centrepiece of Jakarta Fashion Week, brought together eleven Southeast Asian nations through fashion, textiles and shared craft: an installation of 20 significant textile pieces from ten countries at the National Museum of Indonesia, and a fashion parade of designers from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam. Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism framed the programme as cultural diplomacy — the region's weaving traditions, trade routes and shared designs presented not as relics but as a living, wearable conversation between neighbours.
