Hot soup, warm doorsteps: Lithuania's Maltese Soup campaign returns for 3,005 older neighbours

In Lithuania, growing old alone comes with a knock on the door — several times a week, all year round. The Malta Order Relief Service has opened its annual Maltese Soup campaign, which funds hot meals, food parcels, household help, medicines and regular visits for the 3,005 older people it cares for in 44 locations. Volunteers come in deep winter as faithfully as at Christmas, and the service's day centres and clubs tackle the quieter hunger: loneliness. This year's campaign launched on a fitting date — the 100th birthday of its longtime patron, former president Valdas Adamkus — and the money raised will keep the soup, and the visits, coming through 2027.
