In Chennai, scientists sat down species by species to write Tamil Nadu's rescue plans

Tamil Nadu has begun preparing targeted action plans for its endangered and critically endangered species. At a two-day Chennai workshop titled 'Species on the Brink,' run by the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board, forest officials, researchers and scientific institutions worked in specialist groups — flowering plants, ferns and mosses, butterflies and beetles, reptiles and amphibians, freshwater fish, and marine life. Their shared template, and ideas including a dedicated threatened-plant recovery fund, conservation centres, habitat protection and monitoring of amphibian breeding sites, will shape the state's species-by-species recovery plans. Forest minister R. V. Ranjith Kumar also released a handbook to help local biodiversity committees do their part.

The upbeat factorno species gets saved by a slogan — this is conservation done the slow, serious way, one species at a time.
