In Minneapolis, a new solar garden on a city building is cutting power bills for 100 neighbours
A new community solar garden in Minneapolis is now making electricity — and the savings go to the neighbours who need them most. The 704-kilowatt system sits on the city-owned Eastside Maintenance Facility and serves 100 subscribers on low to moderate incomes, with 25 places still open. Each subscriber is expected to save around $25 a month on their energy bill. The Minnesota Renewable Energy Society and Greenway Solar built the project, helped by a $150,000 grant from the City of Minneapolis Green Cost Share Program, which supports solar projects on buildings across the city. It is a simple idea, working in plain sight: a public rooftop, clean power, and lower bills for local families.
