Italy plugged in 4.83 gigawatts of new sunshine in nine months
Italy's rooftops and solar fields had a busy year. Figures from industry group Italia Solare, based on grid operator Terna's official data, show the country added 4.83 gigawatts of new solar power in the first nine months of 2026 — taking its total to 48.35 gigawatts. Big solar farms led the way with 2.24 gigawatts, businesses added 1.7 gigawatts, and homes another 897 megawatts, with sunny Sicily the top region. Batteries are keeping pace: 1,953 megawatt-hours of new storage arrived in the same nine months, most of it paired with solar panels, so more of the day's sunshine can be saved for after dark.
The upbeat factornearly five gigawatts of new solar in nine months — and the batteries to keep it working after sunset.
