Nepal and India switch on their first 400-kilovolt line — a bigger road for clean power between neighbours
At Inaruwa in Sunsari, engineers have energised the first 400-kilovolt cross-border transmission line between Nepal and India: 158 kilometres to New Purnia in Bihar, inaugurated by Nepal's Kul Man Ghising with India's Piyush Goyal joining virtually. It is only the second power link between the two countries, and by far the largest. For Nepal it works in both seasons — importing power in the dry months, and exporting monsoon hydropower surpluses that would otherwise spill unused. The line forms part of the Millennium Challenge Nepal Compact's transmission backbone.
The upbeat factormonsoon rain in the Himalayas, lights on in Bihar — one wire, two countries better off.
