Nigeria just became the 34th country to back one medicines watchdog for all of Africa
Nigeria has ratified the treaty of the African Medicines Agency, becoming the 34th African Union member state to join the continent-wide regulator. The announcement came during the first AMA Week in Kigali, Rwanda, which ran from 25 to 30 October. Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, who leads Nigeria's food and drug agency NAFDAC, called it a major step toward safer medicines: countries that share one set of rules can spot substandard and falsified drugs faster, back local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and approve good medicines without each nation starting from scratch.
The upbeat factor34 countries agreeing to police medicine quality together means a safer pill in Lagos is likelier to mean a safer pill everywhere on the continent.
