One run, one ball, one roar: Nigeria beat Uganda for the first time ever to top their World Cup qualifier
It came down to the very last ball. In Abuja, hosts Nigeria — unbeaten through the tournament — faced Uganda for top spot in their T20 World Cup sub-regional qualifier, and Uganda, chasing 149, needed three runs off the final delivery to win. The drama had already spiked: Nigerian bowler Vincent Adewoye was injured and couldn't finish the over, so Sylvester Okpe stepped up to bowl the last ball, and Juma Miyagi was run out scrambling for the second run that would have tied it. Nigeria won by a single run — their first-ever T20 international victory over Uganda — and both teams advance to the 2027 Africa Regional Final, joining Tanzania, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya on the road to the 2028 T20 World Cup. Isaac Danladi anchored Nigeria's innings with 47 and was named Player of the Series for 223 runs. 'We are delighted,' said captain Chima Akachukwu. 'It goes to show how far we have come.'
