Second chances, in verse: the Lincoln learners who came for wellbeing and left as published poets

A group of adults in Lincoln joined a WEA wellbeing class to steady their mental health. Two years on, they have performed their own poetry in public and published it as an e-book — and at this year's WEA awards in London they were named Learner Group of the Year. The honours, now in their 14th year, also went to Sandra Rogers, 84, recognised as Lifelong Learner for years of French and Latin courses; to Cornwall tutor Stephen Maunder, whose beginner construction courses connect learners with local employers; and to Lisa Richards, whose online wellbeing classes reach full-time carers who cannot leave the house. The WEA is a national charity that has brought adult learning to local communities since 1903.

The upbeat factora class meant to lift people's spirits ended in a published book — proof it is never too late to become a beginner again.
