Seven iwi, one fund: Māori tribes pool NZ$9.9 million (about $5.9 million) for generations unborn
Seven iwi — Māori tribal nations — have done something none has done quite this way before: pooled their money into a single collective fund designed to outlast everyone in the room. Te Mata Oranga, the new vehicle, starts with NZ$9.9 million (about $5.9 million), seeded with NZ$3 million (about $1.8 million) from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and aims to grow into a NZ$10 million (about $6 million) endowment whose returns flow back into Māori health, education and housing. Individual iwi keep full control of their own participation and withdrawals — the collective is a tool, not a takeover. It is patient capital in the literal sense: money managed on behalf of mokopuna, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will inherit both the funds and the whenua, the land.
