Solar power, clean water and a safer fence: a governor's 500-kilowatt promise to Gindiri's schoolchildren

For the students of Gindiri Schools in Nigeria's Plateau State, lessons can be interrupted by power cuts and water shortages. On Sunday, at the schools' 42nd annual alumni reunion, Governor Caleb Mutfwang pledged to fix that: a 500-kilowatt solar power plant to keep the lights on, a new water scheme, and a perimeter fence to make the large mission-school compound safer. Alumni leaders welcomed the promise, and talks are under way on an endowment fund to help the schools keep improving for years to come. It is a pledge, not yet a finished project — but for a school community gathered to celebrate its past, it is a concrete plan for its future.

The upbeat factorsunshine promised to do the work of a generator — 500 kilowatts of solar power, plus clean water and a safer fence, for one school community.
