The ocean swallows 30% of our carbon and 90% of the heat — a UN report says: now measure it properly
The ocean is doing the planet two enormous favours — absorbing around 30% of human-caused carbon dioxide emissions and roughly 90% of the excess heat those emissions create — largely unmeasured and mostly unthanked. The UN's 2026 Climate Technology Progress Report, released in Copenhagen by the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre with partners, makes the case for 'Ocean Carbon Intelligence': sustained investment in the buoys, sensors, data systems and models that track what the ocean is actually doing. Better ocean data means better climate forecasts, better coastal planning, and evidence solid enough to protect the system doing half the planet's climate work.
