The taps are coming to a million more people: Kampala rebuilds the pipes beneath its growth

Kampala's Katosi treatment plant can produce 160 million litres of water a day — but only about half of it reaches homes, because the pipes underneath the city cannot carry more. Uganda's National Water and Sewerage Corporation is now fixing the bottleneck: about 69 kilometres of new transmission mains, reservoirs at Kanyanya, Kabulengwa and Mutungo, booster stations and an upgraded control system across the Greater Kampala network. The corporation says the expanded network should extend reliable supply to up to one million additional people across Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Wakiso and neighbouring communities, and is designed to serve the city's growth through 2040. Some sections will open early — the Namugongo-Kasangati pipeline is due to be commissioned in January 2027.

The upbeat factora million more people, one repaired pipe at a time — the unglamorous work that changes mornings.
