Three pangolins in a sack are safe tonight — Nigeria's customs officers got there first
Acting on a tip-off near Oyo Dam at Igbo-Ora, officers of Nigeria's Customs Service found them concealed in a wire-mesh cage inside a sack: three live pangolins, bound for the illegal wildlife trade. The traffickers fled into the swamp; the pangolins went to the Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative Centre for care and rehabilitation. Acting Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, announcing the rescue on Sunday, said the unit would keep up intelligence-led patrols to protect endangered species. Pangolins — shy, scaly anteaters protected under the CITES treaty — are among the world's most trafficked mammals; this time, the interception came first.
The upbeat factorThree of the world's most hunted animals, sleeping safe because a patrol acted on a tip.
