Two in three Montgomery County schools now earn Maryland's top ratings

Maryland grades every public school from one to five stars. In results released Thursday, 134 of Montgomery County's 200 rated schools — 67 percent — earned four or five stars, up 14 percentage points in a year, and 56 schools improved their rating outright. The gains were broad rather than boutique: 136 schools improved in English, 130 in maths, and schools recorded progress for multilingual learners and students with disabilities across the district — including Rock Terrace School in Rockville, which serves students with disabilities and climbed from two stars to three. Three years ago, fewer than half the county's schools sat in the top tiers.

The upbeat factorimprovement at system scale — 200 schools, with the gains shared by the students who usually get them last.
