A first gold, three times over: Elvira Espinosa makes swimming history for Ecuador

The first final of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games produced a first in every direction. Ecuador's Elvira Espinosa won the women's 400-metre freestyle — the first gold medal awarded at these Games, the first Youth Olympic gold ever won by an Ecuadorian woman, and the first Olympic medal of any kind won by an Ecuadorian swimmer. South Africa's Leah Markgraaff took silver and Belgium's Célya Paques bronze, but the day belonged to a swimmer from a country with no Olympic swimming history to speak of — until, in one race, it did.

The upbeat factorone race, three firsts — and a whole country's swimming story starts with her name.
