Robotic tutors just joined the faculty at Bayelsa Medical University
Bayelsa Medical University in Yenagoa, Nigeria, has unveiled AI-powered robotic tutors and a suite of digital learning tools as the centrepiece of its 2025–2029 strategic plan — a deliberate bet that medical students in Bayelsa should train with the same technology as anywhere in the world. Governor Douye Diri, who launched the innovations on 26 October, was careful about the framing: the robots are there to make teaching more interactive, not to replace lecturers or the mentorship that makes a doctor. He also toured the university's new teaching hospital and the Bayelsa Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, expressing confidence that better local diagnostics will spare residents long journeys out of state for specialist care. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dimie Ogoina's stated ambition is blunt: a globally recognised centre for medical education, research and innovation, built in Yenagoa.
