The Philippines is teaching an AI to warn villages before the flood arrives

On 28 October, the Philippine weather service DOST-PAGASA signed an agreement with South Korea's DI Lab and Skymap Global Philippines to build Project CLAIRE — Climate AI for Resilience and Early Warning. The idea is practical: fuse the data the country already collects into AI systems that monitor weather locally and warn earlier, so that when a tropical cyclone, a deluge or a flood is coming, communities hear about it in time to protect lives, livelihoods and homes. The project is supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) through its Creative Technology Solution programme. 'By bringing together scientific expertise and technological innovation, the initiative aims to help strengthen the foundations for more responsive, data-informed, and forward-looking early warning systems,' the agency said. In one of the world's most storm-exposed countries, earlier is everything.

The upbeat factorthe warning that arrives hours sooner is the difference between a bad day and a catastrophe — and it's being built now.
